COMPETITION: Apple did it - Steve Jobs announced the Apple iPhone [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:51 CET under Wireless - Mobile Devices

No, this posting isn't Windows Mobile related, not in the forehand but since it is about the competition, Microsoft and Windows Mobile might face soon - it's definitely worth to be posted here.
During his keynote at the Macworld, Steve Jobs has announced the long awaited and 1000 times rumored - previously known as Apple iPhone and indeed - it is called iPhone!

But it's even more, it's a widescreen iPod with touch controls (stylus-free), a mobile phone and a breakthrough Internet communications device and not these are not three separate devices but just one!

It features a 3.5" screen, highest resolution screen Apple ever shipped with 160ppi, there's only one button, the "Home" button and it's thinner than any smartphone - only 11.6mm which is even thinner than the Q and the BlackJack.
Apple has added 2 megapixel camera, a 3.5mm headset jack, a SIM tray (woohoo... it's at least GSM), and a sleep-wake switch. At the bottom it has a speaker, the mic and an iPod connector."

And it looks this:

And it shows Cingular as the carrier!

Unfortunately it's not UMTS but a quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE with WiFi and Bluetooth!

And that's how the Web (Safari browser looks like):

Wow... Not too bad for a "not mobile device optimized" website! 8O

And now for the release dates and prices! The 4 GB iPhone will retail for US$ 499, the 8 GB version for US$ 599 (both with a subsidized 2 years contract).
It will hit North America/USA in June and will be available exclusively from Cingular! Europe will get the iPhone in the 4th quarter of this year, followed by Asia in 2008.

Apple has chosen to unveil the iPhone today because the device has to go through FCC approval and they thought it would be better to introduce it themselves rather than let the FCC introduce the iPhone. ;-)

Quality Time - here the HTC Star Trek and HTC Hermes
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:02 CET under Wireless - Mobile Devices

As you might have seen in my previous User Group posting, I recently have received an HTC Hermes (unfortunately the old ID with the 300 MHz (only) CPU, not the new one with the expected 400 MHz CPU) and an HTC Star Trek aka Qtek 8500.

I always appreciate if ODMs and carriers supports me and in this case I have/want to thank Qtek/HTC and a not specified mobile operator for their support of the::unwired since this kind of support makes the community working only.
