Packing my bags for 3GSM Congress in Barcelona
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:34 CET under Job - Editor and Journalist

Barcelona is the keyword, I always want to say Cannes and interesting enough I'm not the only one. :-) Most of the GSM insiders are still talking about Cannes like "see you in Cannes!" or "will you be in Cannes too?".
The reason for this is simple: for more than 15 years or so, the 3GSM Congress (in the early day it just was the GSM Congress) was in Cannes until it became too busy and expensive there. Therefore the GSMA moved it to Barcelona.

I think it's my 8th or 9th GSM Congress I'm attending and I'm leaving for tomorrow noon. While in the early days I was attending it as an employee when I was working for network operators and MVNOs (in Germany and UK better known as Service Providers), for some years now I'm attending it as a consultant, which I'm and for sure as a journalist, which I'm also - at least a kind of. My agenda is pretty mixed, some consultant related stuff, some journalist related stuff and plenty of time (this year I stay one day longer and will fly back on Thursday - my birthday ;-) - which is a good reason to leave and to be at home in the evening anyway) to roam through the conference and around the exhibition. So for sure you will find my personal 3GSM coverage here at the::unwired (in English) and over at digital living mobile (in German).

"Tekguru" and fellow MVP Daron Brewood just informed me, that due to server problems both, and are offline at this time and they do not know what is causing the problems, or how soon the sites will be back online.
They even might have to end up moving hosts and setting up again using backed up data. :-(

So if you notice HTTP errors if you try to access or which you get for sure, since the server is gone, don't be surprised. But for sure both will back soon.

KUNG HEI FAT CHOI: Happy Chinese New Year
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:11 CET under Off Topic

I wish all my Chinese (speaking) readers a Happy Chinese New Year whether you are speaking Mandarin: "Gong Xi Fa Cai" or Cantonese: "Kung Hei Fat Choi"!

You may still wonder why I remember Chinese New Year as a "Gwailo"!? Pretty simple - because I lived and worked some years ago in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Taipei when I was there for a trainee program. Because of that and because many of my friends and business contacts are Chinese, Chinese New Year is still part of my Outlook calendar like Western New Year is as well.

Yes, I was off for some days snowboarding
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:58 CET under Off Topic

If you wonder where I was during the past days when some exciting news made it to the public: spontaneously I was off for some days snowboarding in Austria.
And since the weather and conditions were that good:

I staid a day longer to enjoy snowboarding on perfect slopes (I know. it's not the most spectacular photo of me but the only one I have from the weekend):

CHEERS: Thank you for a successful year 2005 - have a good start into 2006
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:18 CET under Off Topic

You might have noticed my absence during the past days ;-) and you are right, I took off some days to spend the days between Christmas and New Year with my family and friends, but without my PC 8O but with my Smartphone only (for E-Mail access). ;-)
Nevertheless, before the year goes bye, I want to take the opportunity to wish you a happy new year, have a good start into 2006 - wherever you are.
For me, 2005 was a great one and I hope 2006 will continues as 2005 was. The transition from PPCW.Net to the::unwired went perfect, the readership of the::unwired nearly doubled (thanks to all of you, my dear readers) in 2005, the::unwired became part of Google's News Network, behind the scenes I'm/was working on some great ideas with partners, I was hired by CMP-WEKA as "Blogger #1" for the digital living blog which develops great as well, etc, etc. So all together, I'm more than satisfied with 2005 and I hope you had a nearly successful year as well. If not, I'm sure 2006 will become even better.
