Cheers from Seattle
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:46 CET under Digital - Lifestyle

As I wrote earlier, I'm out the coming week for the Microsoft Global MVP Summit where Microsoft invites all its MVPs to get in contact with the product teams (in my case the Windows Mobile group) and I left Munich yesterday morning:

With a 5 hours stop-over in Copenhagen (where I teamed-up with other MVPs) I had plenty of time to spend and this weekend is another Biathlon World Cup weekend. As you might remember, I'm a big Biathlon fan and thanks to Windows Mobile, the Copenhagen W-LAN network and my always on Media Center (and therefore WebGuide4) in Munich I was able to place shift my live TV to the Copenhagen airport (unfortunately, the Sling Media Slingplayer Mobile is still not working with Windows Mobile 6 devices I'm currently Beta testing):

Pretty cool since I had a downstream - via the public W-LAN network on the airport - of 210 Kbps which is definitely good enough to watch TV on mobile devices.
Also a great add-on was the Proporta USB Mobile Device Charger (which I've previously reviewed on the::unwired) because it kept my device battery in a good condition which allowed me to use the Xda during the flight as well.

Join Microsoft's Windows Live i'm Campaign
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:54 CET under Digital - Lifestyle

i'm is a new initiative from Windows Live Messenger. Every time you start a conversation using i'm, Microsoft shares a portion of the program's advertising revenue with some of the world's most effective organizations dedicated to social causes. Microsoft has set no cap on the amount it will donate to each organization. The sky's the limit.

Windows Vista Sidebar Gadget for WebGuide4
Posted by Arne Hess - at 09:19 CET under Digital - Lifestyle

Anyone of you is using WebGuide4 for Windows Media Center as well? If so, check out the new Vista Sidebar Gadget for WebGuide4. It's pretty impressive what Doug is developing for the Media Center, to make a great idea (the Microsoft Media Center Edition) working even better (using WebGuide4).

Improve your Airport experience with the Sling Media Slingbox
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:13 CET under Digital - Lifestyle

As you know, I'm currently hanging around in the U.S. since I'm decided to stay some extra days here after the Möbius Boston event for some sightseeing as well as visiting my aunt in NYC.
Nevertheless, this means traveling and yesterday evening was another evening I had to stay some hours on the airport (and thanks to the increased security checks, you never know when you have to be there which mostly means you are on airports way too early) and had this "kill time" which means I was way too tired to work but was looking for some entertainments.
Even web-surfing becomes boring, sooner or later, if you have read all your RSS channels and since it was weekend, not too much happened in the tech-world. Another great test for my Sling Media Slingbox which was already awaiting me.

Thankfully, the Boston Logan International Airport has a terminal-wide W-LAN coverage and therefore I was looking for a nice bar, to have some beers and a snack. I found one (with - what Samuel Adams calls - some "October Fest Beer (not to comparable  with the real Oktoberfest Beer in Munich) and after some clicks and taps on my O2 Xda trion, I was connected (for US$ 6) to the W-LAN.
So here we are, I've fired up the Sling Player Mobile and had the full access to my German TV-channels. Kill time became Kill Bill Vol.1 which was on show and while most Americans watched one of the two Football matches on the flat screens in that bar (Football was the reason why the guys over at Sling Media invented the Slingbox), I've watched my German TV:

Thanks to my Bluetooth headset, I was pretty much on my own, until a guy next to me asked me what I was doing there (another European who hadn't too much use for Football). So I've explained him first Windows Mobile and after the Slingbox (thanks to the Internet connection we were on the Slingbox site as well). Since he was from the UK, he is able to buy it and he told me he had seen it in the shops already but never had an idea for what the Slingbox was good for. Also his friend was pretty amazed (a real Rugby-fan as what I can say) and both are traveling to the U.S. regularly (and if one of these guys reads this here: welcome to the::unwired since I gave both my business card and recommended to visit the::unwired to get more information about mobility and wireless).

Watching the FIFA World Cup live in a Munich Beer Garden
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:58 CET under Digital - Lifestyle

You know, one of the things I really enjoy here in Munich are our Beer Gardens. A great place to meet friends, to have lunch or dinner, to relax and - during the World Cup - to watch the matches! :-) So I did as well last Saturday when Germany played against Sweden (sorry Sweden, never knew that Germany can play so "Brazilian"). So yes, I was early enough in the Beer Garden close to my apartment to make sure I get a place with sight to the video wall (most Beer Gardens have at the moment and since the weather is so Mediterranean, the best place to watch Football is anywhere in the garden). However, I prepared myself, just in case something fails, like the video wall crashes during the match or whatever - I took my O2 Xda trion (one of the early development devices) with me, equipped with the Sling Media SlingPlayer to access my Slingbox at home - just as a fallback and indeed, it was working great (sorry for the low quality of the pictures I snapped with my i-mate SP5):
